The Little Things

April 13, 2011

I was in Hong Kong a few months ago and stayed at a hotel that caught my eye. Over the years I have stayed at many hotels and they ranged from all levels.

This particular hotel was unique in many ways. One it was not a high end hotel, but they had paid attention to detail and catered their services to the niche market they served. This was a business hotel as it was near the Hong Kong International Airport.

Here are a few things that I noticed in my room:

Second Largest Company in the World

April 7, 2011

It was recently announced that Apple became the second largest company in the world, in my mind they are geniuses and it has to not only do with their product but also the process to acquire and make the entire end to end process enjoyable. If you have dealt with Apple in the past, you will notice two of the many things that stand out about the company:

A Canadian Real Estate Market Doesn’t Exist in 2011, So Don’t Be Fooled

April 1, 2011

The following is a guest post by Don R. Campbell; best selling author, and President of The Real Estate Investment Network (REIN).

What does 2011 hold for Canadian Homeowners and Real Estate Investors?

Almost a quarter of the way into the new year, many people are still looking for ‘predictions’ of what 2011 will hold. That’s why you see so many pundits come out of the woodwork to share their insights. I do find this a bit strange as nothing about the market really changed from December 2010 to January 2011 and through to March 2011, other than a few new pictures on your kitchen calendar. Those who pay close attention to the underlying economic fundamentals aren’t struggling with what is coming next.

The Conversationalist

March 27, 2011

I have to admit it but somedays are much more tougher than others to concentrate. Your mind seems to be all over the place and no matter how disciplined you can be, the conversations in your head distracts you nonstop.

I am sure you have experienced it; it’s that internal conversation in your head. You know the one…
The conversationalist knows you best, it knows what your soft spots are and how to manipulate you and he/she is a pro at it.

I have become more aware of the following thoughts that seem to enter my head on a regular basis:

Perspectives

March 23, 2011

I saw Alvin Law recently speak. If you haven’t heard him before, he is not only engaging but has a unique way to talk about life perspectives.

Perspective is everything.

Alvin was born with no arms. Everyday he gets asked the question, “what happened to you?”

Can you imagine if you were asked this same question, everyday, five times a day, for your entire life? I am sure some of us would get irritated and angered. I am sure some of us get irritated or angered if someone asks us to repeat something once.

Toastmasters Speech

March 17, 2011

This is a first; I recently delivered a speech at a Toastmasters Contest and thought I would share it. My friend Lou Mulligan author of `Hey! I Can Do This` was kind enough to tape it for me.

I hope it inspires you to join Toastmasters.

Three layered fountain

March 6, 2011

I recently heard a great talk on the “three layered fountain” that spoke on managing finances and creating a platform for growth.

Picture a three layered fountain as seen above with you pouring a jug of juice to fill the fountain.
The juice represents your money.

Pour this juice into the fountain and naturally the first bowl is filled.

The first bowl is “stability”; or in other words, the goal is to create adequate income that allows you to cover your basic needs.

Txting

February 23, 2011

I am an avid follower of Seth Godin, he recently wrote this short message that I thought was beneficial:

Yes, you shouldn’t text while driving, or talk on the cell phone, or argue with your dog or drive blindfolded. It’s an idiot move, one that often leads to death (yours or someone else’s).

I don’t think you should text while working, either. Or use social networking software of any kind for that matter. And you probably shouldn’t eat crunchy chips, either.

Internet Marketing

February 16, 2011

I was recently researching on the Internet for a new company that a friend is launching. One of things I was reviewing was research results. Why? Because I am learning that its pretty easy to purposely skew research questions to get the results you want.

For this reason, I feel that many new products, restaurants, ideas fail, even though the research said they should have succeeded.

One thing I keep thinking about is that when data from multiple credible sources continue saying the same thing, than that data is typically true.

Such is the case when it comes to Internet Marketing.

Whats your taste?

February 13, 2011

We all know how important marketing plays in our lives. My good friend, Aaron Brox (started a new blog at: http://www.twitchdad.net/) and I used to frequently talk about this topic while we worked at CIBC. He had first started me on this thought process about 7 years ago when he challenged me to find any empty space that DID NOT have any marketing attached to it while I made my journey from work to home.

I was baffled, everywhere I looked, I was and am constantly being sold or subconsciously sold something. I was beginning to think that ignorance may sometimes be a bliss (thats another blog topic).
