June 19, 2011

Interesting video presented by Stanford University on what we think makes us happy and an experiment that they conducted.

A video only 6 minutes long is an excerpt of the whole presentation. The entire presentation can be found on the Stanford Website.

Are our thoughts original?

June 15, 2011

I recently heard a quote “steal from one source, it’s plagiarism, copy from two, it’s research”.

When I sat and thought about this, I was more intrigued by asking the question, are any of our thoughts original or simply a combination of everyone else’s thoughts? If the latter is true then it becomes essential on who we surround ourselves with as their thoughts influence ours.

In terms of entrepreneurship, when I think of a new idea, is it really a new idea or did I just borrow the idea?

Books

Good books are perpetual silent friends. A book to me is like a lighter that ignites a flame to start your engine.

Influencer

June 3, 2011

We all have clients or customers. Perhaps your client is a person selling or buying a home, or perhaps your client is your Manager or perhaps your client is a private investor?

Typically entrepreneurs think that to get your idea into a company you have to go to the top level, but there are many other key influencers in the company.

Seek these influencers by spending more time with your target client.

If you think about your own company that you work for, I am sure that subconsciously, you know who the influencers are? Perhaps it’s the secretary who helps speak to the Director or perhaps it’s the opinionated analyst?

Summarized

May 29, 2011

Is the secret to getting anything you want in life summarized by the following two points? In my opinion, the Secret is:

1. Be clear and focused on what you want in life (material or immaterial)

After answering this question, then ask yourself:

2. How bad do you want it?

Standing Out

May 26, 2011

I recently read the following except:

“Every morning in Harlem, Mark stands in a corner bundled up with other people. A delivery pick up truck pulls up looking to labourers for the day. None of the people are different but he picks up three people, pays them minimum wage and drives off. Mark is left standing to wait, maybe he will get picked up tomorrow, maybe not. The next day he waits again.”

Are we the same? When we apply for a job, is our resume sitting in a pile waiting to get picked? Are we hoping to get chosen?

First and Last Thoughts

May 23, 2011

Before you go to sleep, what do you think about? Do you watch the nightly news (as many people do), pray or watch a movie and wake up to turn it off?

When you first wake up, are you scrambling or in a panic, worried about getting to work on time?

Try this; 30 minutes before you sleep, watch your favourite comedy or read a light hearted book.

In the morning, wake up and take a deep breath and wake up with a positive thought.

Being in the Game

May 17, 2011

I love the game of Squash, it’s incredible – I am addicted. Not only is it a great workout but its challenging and fun. Forbes magazine completed its list of 10 healthiest sports and Squash rated #1. Regardless of the fact that the sport is healthy, the best thing I enjoy about squash is being in the court. When I am in the court, I am only thinking about the game, I am thinking of the next serve or my next swing. Apart from that, no other thoughts enter my head, I am not worrying about the past or the future – simply I am in the moment.

Sarah Kay: If I should have a daughter…

April 28, 2011

Two weeks ago, I had an opportunity to attend the “Inspire Together” fundraiser. At the fundraiser, we heard a performer use spoken word poetry to deliver his message to the group. Sarah Soares created this not profit organization to create a movement to help individuals less fortunate than themselves – further information can be found at: Inspire Together

Last week, I came across the following video and since then have watched it 5 times! Sarah Kay, also uses spoken word poetry to speak to her audience in a delightful and meaningful way. The video is approximately 18 minutes in length and its worth it! She received two standing ovations.

JK asks…

April 17, 2011

I recently read this and thought I would share it as it speaks on entrepreneurship:

JK asks,

“It’s like, how does anyone start their own business? How is it even possible? How do they deal with the crippling fear and harsh economic realities?”

Some people believe that if you have a good job, you shouldn’t start your own gig, because it’s foolish to give up a job you can’t easily replace.

And some people believe that if you don’t have a great job, it’s foolish to waste time (and the money you can ill afford to lose) starting something when you’d be a lot better off getting a great job or going to school until you do.
