Gratitude

Do you know what the most powerful emotional state that people can have is? Yes, that is gratitude. When you are in the state of gratitude, you get to see things clearly and any obstacles become an opportunity for you.

I use a gratitude list to remind me of the many things that I can take for granted and this list is on my desk so that I am can see it on a day to day basis. What am I grateful for? The many things in my life…from owning a car, to having a warm bed or having a healthy body. These items may be big or small but these are things that make up our lives.

In a recent corporate study conducted, they showed the top 10 ways to motivate an employee from an employee perspective and the number one way was “appreciation”. “Good wages” was number 5! In another management study it revealed that approximately 50% of employees left a company because they felt unappreciated and close to 90% said they did not receive acknowledgment for the work they did.

In theory, we have three different kinds of appreciation: auditory, visual and kinesthetic – everyone has a dominant type they prefer. Auditory people need to hear it, visual people need to see it while kinesthetic people need to feel it. If you want to feel like a real pro at appreciation, learn what kind of feedback makes the most impact on the person you are delivering to.
When in doubt use all three types of communication – tell them, show them and pat them on the back.

We can easily focus our attention on the problems that persist around us but we often forget that we have many wonderful things happening in our lives and with the people that surround us.
