Launching your business

Often when we try to launch a new business or new idea but we wait….and wait…..

We wait because the business idea is not perfect, we wait because we feel we don’t have adequate knowledge, we wait because (insert)….and we wait.

It’s the NHL hockey playoffs and one may have said that the Montreal Canadians (after recently completing a major upset win over Washington) did not have their game plan perfected. They had just qualified for the playoffs in the final week of the regular season and Vegas odds were heavily stacked against Montreal. The interesting analogy is that Montreal still stepped on the ice knowing that they had 60 minutes to compete each night. And every night they learned…. they learned how to play against a stronger team and continued to perfect themselves. Sure they made mistakes, they were down 3-1 in the series but they continued to compete. They would have never finished the game unless they had started and their success or failure was apparent after the puck dropped.

A start up business usually takes 2.3 iterations – major radical changes – during its life. HP was never into the computer business when it first started and now is one of the leading computer manufacturers in the world. Similarly, Google uses this strategy as well – initially when Google Video came to life, one would have thought that users would find “videos” on this site (logically!?) however this was not the case and after launching and receiving user feedback, they eventually got it right!

Starting a business (and hockey) requires that you begin, then you get to practice along the way. Don’t wait until everything is perfect before the launch of your business. You just need some good basics: a little knowledge, a good Realtor,a good mortgage broker a good (fill in the blank) and you are on your way.
